Oricon website provides Weekly sales data on the Top 30 selling Singles and Albums and Yearly Top 100 ranking for free. Internet subscribers to its website (who pay a fee ) gets sales data on Singles while sales is in the Top 200 chart and sales data on Albums while sales is in the Top 300 chart. You can get sales data outside the Top 200 Singles and or Top 300 Albums if you pay pay huge money to subscribe to Oricon for full market report. Because of the huge cost of a full market report , only record labels subscribe to it. Subscribers to full market report get weekly result every Monday

Oricon weekly chart dated (always Monday) 7/11/05 is posted on Oricon website on (always Wednesday) 7/6/05 .It covers sales from 6/27 (Monday) to 7/3 (Sunday ). New Singles / Albums are those released 6/29 (Wednesday--Almost all releases are on Wednesday) So first week sales information on Oricon covers first 5 days of sales only from 6/29 to 7/3 and not first 7 days . The succeeding weekly chart will start to cover 7 days of sales ( 7/4 to 7/10…… )

Actual last week of December sales is combined with the first week sales figure of January the following year in the weekly chart. For example Oricon chart dated 1/3/05 (posted on Oricon website on 12/29/04) covers sales from 12/20 to 12/26/04, the next Oricon weekly chart will be dated 1/17/05 (posted on Oricon website on 1/12/05) cover sales from 12/27/04 to 1/9/05 which is 2 weeks or 14 days instead of the usual 1 week or 7 day sales

why are certain singles charted on the daily chart a day before their actual release? what about Sunday sales?
in Japanese CD stores, the CDs generally hit the shelves one day before their release date. That's why you always see the new releases (usually released on Wednesdays) on the daily charts for Tuesday. However, sometimes when there are holidays and stuff, they hit the shelves even earlier. For example, CDs released on 1/1 usually seem to chart a few days before the release date.

As for the Sunday thing--yes, Sunday sales are counted (the Oricon week is Monday through Sunday). They have daily charts for Sunday. and yes, CD Stores do open on Sundays in Japan

what is chaka-uta (R), etc that is related to this?

how and where to find Oricon info besides the Oricon website?
1) www.2ch.net
2) Type in CDチャート in the bar up the top and press enter.
3) Look for a thread near the top with today's date on it. If it also has "ジャニヲタ" or "V系" in the title, you're in the wrong one.
4) Check that it's not over 1,000. When that happens, you can'e post in the thread anymore (but it stays viewable for a day afterwards). If the thread's over 1,000 and there's no new thread, wait a while.
5) If you want the entire thread, press "全部" up the top. Otherwise stick with "最新50"; it shows the 50 most recent posts. Pressing "全部" is also how you see the posts of a thread that has just recently in the last day gone over the 1,000 post mark.
6) The daily figures are usually posted in a very standard table, showing the entire top 50 for both singles/albums for the past seven days. The daily figures are updated at 6:50pm~ish JST, while weekly sales figures trickle in around 5:00pm on Tuesdays. The top three daily index points should be posted slightly before the top 50 singles/albums. They look like they've been copied and pasted from somewhere and ａｒｅ　ｉｎ　ａ　ｆｏｎｔ　ｌｉｋｅ　ｔｈｉｓ.
7) Be very careful with working out what the official figures are. People often post their own predictions for what's about to come, though usually they don't use the nice little table that's posted for the daily positions. The daily figures, however, are really messy. If you are unsure, sometimes people post the week so far's figures in a little bix, showing everyone who got into the top three so far. Those figures are definitely the right ones.

aand that's it! If you post the top 50 daily positions here, it's a good idea to replace the --'s with **'s as this forum formats the --'s differently and it looks all messy.

The NINKI ratings are the results of a poll conducted by Oricon indicating interest in an upcoming release. Although the ratings are never a true reflection of sales, it does give a strong prediction about where the single/album will place in terms of popularity amongst the Japanese public. having said so, they are NOT an indication of how it will perform in terms of chart positioning and total sales for the week.

what counts into Oricon are the following:
JBook
Amazon Japan
HMV Japan
Neowing/CDJapan

these sites are Japan-based operated sites. YesAsia is not a Japan-based website as it's a Hong Kong-based company. having said so, since YA gets their materials from their suppliers, it is unknown whether these sales from their Japan supplier will be included in the sales. that is, if the suppliers are eligible to submit their numbers to Oricon, and if so, whether they do submit their numbers or not.

Was anyone else really impressed with how well AKB48's single did? Was there any reason for it to do THAT well? (events, handshakes, etc.) Or is their popularity on the upswing?
